We present the classification of SN 2023tyk (ZTF23abhvlji) as a Type Ia supernova (SN) at z=0.055. To the best of our knowledge, SN 2023tyk is the first transient which required no human action from its discovery to its spectroscopic classification being posted to TNS.
ZTF23abhvlji was automatically identified as a bright extragalactic transient in the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF; Bellm+19) public alert stream by BTSbot (and first reported to TNS independently 2023TNSTR2468....1M). BTSbot (Rehemtulla+23, full publication in prep.) is a convolutional neural network built to identify and automatically request follow-up of sources relevant to the Bright Transient Survey (BTS; Fremling+20, Perley+20) by producing a bright transient score for each ZTF alert packet (Patterson+19). On October 5th, BTSbot triggered the SED Machine (SEDM; Blagorodnova+18) on ZTF23abhvlji. SEDM robotically obtained a spectrum, which was automatically reduced by pySEDM (Rigault+19) and classified (2023TNSCR2522....1F) by SNIascore (Fremling+21).
BTSbot is hosted on Kowalski (Duev+19), ZTF’s first party alert broker and data system, and submits triggers using Fritz, ZTF’s SkyPortal instance (Coughlin+23).
This report is based on observations obtained with the Samuel Oschin Telescope 48-inch and the 60-inch Telescope at the Palomar Observatory as part of the Zwicky Transient Facility project. ZTF is supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. AST-2034437 and a collaboration including Caltech, IPAC, the Weizmann Institute for Science, the Oskar Klein Center at Stockholm University, the University of Maryland, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron and Humboldt University, the TANGO Consortium of Taiwan, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee, Trinity College Dublin, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories, and IN2P3, France. Operations are conducted by COO, IPAC, and UW.
SED Machine is based upon work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. 1106171.
