We observed the faint transient SN2020ekq (PS20act) discovered by Shubham et al. (AstroNote 2020-61) during the "Pan-STARRS Search for Kilonovae" (Smartt et al., AstroNote 2019-48). We used the Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) equipped with the ALFOSC camera. Our spectrum (4x900 s exposure, starting on MJD 58920.87) covers the approximate wavelength range 4000-9000 Å. Our slit extends over the body of the host galaxy, NGC 2463, and from narrow Halpha emission we measure a redshift z = 0.026, in approximate agreement with the value reported in NED.
The spectrum shows a clear Halpha P Cygni profile. Running SNID and astrodash yields good matches with type IIP SNe about 35 days after maximum light.
We acknowledge the NOT staff for carrying out our observations, in particular Julia Martikainen and Teet Kuutma, and Shubham Srivastav and Stephen Smartt for discussion.

Spectroscopic classification of SN2020ekq as a type IIP SN
Abstract:
We classify SN2020ekq, identified by the "Pan-STARRS Search for Kilonovae", as a type IIP SN, about 35 days after maximum.
