Spectroscopic classification of SN2020fqv as a Type II (likely IIb) SN.
Abstract:
We report the spectroscopic classification of SN2020fqv as a likely Type IIb SN.
We obtained a spectrum of SN2020fqv with YFOSC mounted on the Li-Jiang 2.4-m telescope, China, on 10 April 2020. The spectrum shows broad H-a in emission, as well as H-beta and He I 5876, superimposed on a highly reddened continuum. Fitting the spectrum with Superfit (Howell et al. 2005, ApJ, 634, 1190) gives a good match to the Type IIb supernova 1993J reddened by A_V=2.6 mag; all top fits to Type II events require A_V>2 mag. We compare the spectrum also to that of SN 2013cu (SN IIb with a similar early spectrum to that of SN 2020fqv), and determine the likely reddening to be E(B-V) = 0.42 mag (A_V ~ 1.6 mag) from this comparison. In any case, the implied dust reddening is high, with UV extinction of >3 mag at 2500A.
